Yab-Yum & Sacred Union: Symbol, Mind & Practice

By Acharya Devananda · Tantra Wisdom Portal

Chapter 1: Reading Sacred Art

Yab-yum images show deities in embrace. In mature traditions this is a teaching device: method and wisdom, compassion and emptiness, Shiva and Shakti — not entertainment and not an invitation to violate boundaries.

Chapter 2: Father-Mother Meaning

Yab (father) and yum (mother) point to complementary principles. Separated, each is incomplete. United, they symbolize non-dual realization. Inner practice: balance doing and being in daily life.

Chapter 3: Meditation on the Symbol

1) Place a traditional image respectfully. 2) Soft gaze 2–5 minutes. 3) Reflect: my effort and my insight are one path. 4) Rest in silence without fantasy. If only lust arises, switch to breath and ethics practice. Readiness is real.

Chapter 4: Ethics Before Technique

Any talk of union practices without consent, equality, and emotional maturity is not tantra — it is harm. This book does not provide closed ritual sexual instructions. It trains the mind that would be required if such a path ever appeared through genuine lineage.

Chapter 5: Daily Micro-Practice

Before difficult speech: one hand on belly (earth/method), one on heart (sky/wisdom), one breath, then speak truthfully. That is yab-yum off the cushion.

Chapter 6: Closing

Honor the image by becoming more whole — not by collecting exotic methods. Wisdom without compassion is cold; compassion without wisdom is blind. Embrace both.
